Do creationists understand the difference between a “scientist” and “some guy with a degree”?
When asked to recognize that science has rejected creationism completely; that there are essentially zero actual scientists in biology fields who give creationism even the slightest credit, some claim that us rationalists haven’t done on our homework, and that there are in fact scientists who ‘study’ ‘creation science’!

    Here are some basic facts.

    1. There has not been a single paper published in any significant science journal supporting creationism in the last One Hundred And Fifty Years (that’s 150, folks). Why is that important? Why do journals matter? Because they work. All the stuff around you now.. computers, electricity, buildings, cars, planes was (and is) written in the pages of science journals. It’s where knowledge comes from. If peer reviewed journals were not useful for making sense of the world, we’d still be struggling with the wheel.

    2. The Discovery Institute famously published an add claiming that “700 Scientists Support Intelligent Design”. Upon further review, it turned out that something like 150 of those were actually doing research in acredited universities. Only about 30 of them were actually doing research in some field of biology. All but one of those, when contacted directly, said that the DI either lied or exaggerated their position by putting their name on that list. So, according to the DI’s own research, there is exactly 1 crack pot biologist who is actually paid to do research who believes in creationism.

Sure, there are bunch of dudes with degrees who write books and do “research” for crackpot organizations like Answers in Genisus. But they don’t produce anything that’s used in any way by real scientists. Their work may as well be, and essentially is, a work of fiction.

Seriously. If you can’t get someone who actually knows something about biology to think about your ideas for 10 minutes after 150 years of trying, it’s time to think seriously about giving it up.

    Eh?
Queen Kira; you’re right, it doesn’t take a scientist to ‘believe’ in evolution. It doesn’t take a scientist to believe in anything; anyone can believe whatever they like – it’s easy. It does, however, take a scientist to examine and understand all available data and make some sense out of it. And it’s clear that scientists who actually study the evidence for evolution, and it’s affect on biology and other sciences, turn to creationism after doing so. You and your kind have somehow managed to do it, but rational people find it difficult to discount the opinions of tens of thousands of people who have spend their entire lives studying something over 7 or 8 generations. Do you really think all of those people are just living their lives to fool you?
Annie, I don’t care if you discount science completely. As long as you don’t vote and make good hamburgers, you have my blessing.

Is critiquing a professors book choice rude?
I was emailing my professor about a book review I turned in 4 days late because of a misunderstanding of when it was due. He replied basically telling me I was out of luck, next time check the syllabus. I received a zero :( anyway I replied this…

“Alright, thanks again for your time and quick responses. I enjoyed your class this semester! my sister will be attending (university) next year and I’m going to reccomend you, but I’ll tell her to pay more attention to the syllabus haha.
No offense, but that book (Victims) was awful though. The worst of the 3 in my opinion.
    happy holidays!
    Jesse”

I was wondering, DO YOU GUYS THINK I WAS RUDE IN CRITIQUING HIS BOOK CHOICE? because I failed to get a response. I was thinking he may have taken it to heart.

Solve using the zero factor property and also rational expressions?
I’ve spent all day on this test review, and I’m down to a few problems I’m struggling with.
I have the answers, but don’t know how to solve them.
Also, I’m really horrible at factoring into (x+ )(x- ) situations.
Usually, I’d use (1/2b)^2, but with odd numbers that turns to fractions.
    Fractions also confuse me.. anyway..

    Zero Factor Property:
    1) x(6x – 1) = 0
So this comes out to 6x^2 – 1 = 0. But then how do I factor it down?
    The answer is supposed to be {0, 1/6}

    2) 7x^2 + 19x – 6 = 0
    How do I factor this down? The answer is supposed to be {-3, 2/7}
Forget the part about “also rational expressions”.
I’m making a new question for that.
If you know those, check out my other questions for more points.

Seafoam: Does it do what people commonly believe or is it liquid malarkey ?
On the topic of Seafoam (the magic automotive elixir), you can read rave reviews of it and watch videos of it on YouTube, etc.

Some guy removes some vacuum tube or the like, and lets his car drink a whole bunch of Seafoam. He turns off the engine and gives it some time to work its magic. He comes back, fires up his ride, and smoke comes blasting out of the exhaust.

Then everybody comments about how that smoke is all ‘bad’ stuff, and how the car in question is now far better off for being rid of it. A whole bunch of stories ensue – guys adding their own Seafoam stories and how much ‘bad’ stuff Seafoam removed from their cars: the assumption being that the amount of smoke is congruent with the amount of ‘bad’ stuff that the Seafoam has exorcised.

Now I read and watch that stuff and a question pops into my head:

Why must it be that the smoke is evidence of ‘bad’ stuff exiting through the exhaust ? Aside from statements like “I did it and it made a big difference”, what evidence is there to suggest that it is not just a smoke show in a can ? Take a new car right as it comes off the line – zero miles on it – would you bet the ranch that it wouldn’t kick out a ton of smoke ?

Has anyone ever tested the smoke to find out what it really contains ?

Can You Change A Grade After Report Cards Are Released?
My teacher is being unfair and is giving me zeros in places for no reason at all. She doesn’t like me for some reason..AND IM NOT JUST SAYING THAT. My other grades are good. This is how I know its unfair. Yesterday I had a ‘B’, not I have an ‘E’…And I review where she gave me zeros and I did that stuff and turned it in ON TIME. Shes crazy.

So i was wondering can you change the record in case the teacher messes up or something.

Do you agree with Judith Curry that this is a paper?
In a recent blog post here: http://judithcurry.com/2011/02/22/hiding-the-decline/

Judy Curry claims that Richard Muller published a paper supporting the work of McIntyre and McKittrick. Her exact words are:

“… While most of his research is in physics, Muller has also published important papers on paleoclimate, including a controversial paper* that supported McIntyre and McKitrick’s analysis. …”

*this was a hyperlink to this article: http://www.debarygolfers.com/pdfs/Global_Warming_Bombshell.pdf

To someone doing research, this implies that Muller has published scholarly peer-reviewed works on the subject, especially the link provided, which Curry called a “paper.” However, the “paper” in question is really an article in a popular science publication, not a peer-reviewed journal. A search of Science Citations Index for any papers with the key words “global warming” or “climate change” with Richard A. Muller as an author turns up zero results. The only thing that turns up for Muller is an editorial in Science on Milankovitch forcing that was written over ten years ago. Is Judy Curry being deceptive here, or does she truly not understand the distinction between publishing an article in Technology Review or an editorial and submitting a paper for publication in Nature, PNAS, Physical Review, or even one of the IEEE journals?
Edit: Mike: Those are over 15 years old, and deal mainly with orbital forcing. Curry implies Muller is an expert on temperature reconstructions, yet he’s done nothing in that field, and nothing recent relating to climate at all.
